This fingertip pulse oximeter is a small, lightweight device that measures how much oxygen your blood is carrying (SpO2) and your pulse rate, without needles or blood tests. How to use

1. Sit down and rest for a few minutes. Warm your hands if they are cold.
2. Remove nail polish or false nails from the finger you will use.
3. Open the clip, place your fingertip inside (nail facing up) and press the button.
4. Keep your hand still at heart level; read the result after about 10 seconds, once it has settled.

Understanding your reading

For most healthy people SpO2 is 95–100%. Your doctor may give you a different target if you have a lung condition. If your reading is below 94%, or you feel short of breath, have chest pain or your lips look blue, seek medical advice straight away – and in an emergency go to the nearest hospital. A pulse oximeter supports, but does not replace, a doctor’s assessment.

Cold hands, movement, nail polish, very dark nail varnish or poor circulation can give low or unstable readings – warm your hands and repeat.
